Today is Heritage Day in South Africa and so we celebrate by remembering the cultural heritage of the many people that make up the population of South Africa. We also use this opportunity to celebrate our history and one of our favourite memories comes from 3 June 1998 when, a year before the end of his term as South Africa’s first democratically elected President, and eight years after being released from 27 years as a political prisoner, Nelson Mandela officially opened the new President Hotel, unveiling a commemorative plaque with his name on it.
